It's rounded like that so that it won't sliver when you hit it. You make it tight , hit the screw a good thwack, tighten the screw, hit the screw again etc. Eventually the pitman arm will pop free. You should use a Pitman puller, but some pitman pullers don't fit on the idler so you're forced to muscle it off with a pickle fork.

By far the worst part was trying to remove the pitman arm. Which required a special tool rental. (the pitman puller I bought was too small. Now if I could get the idler arm pressed and the pitman pressed back to the steering box, I could finish the rest in probably 30 minutes.

Then, take two BMF hammers and simultaneously smack 180 degree opposite sides of the pitman arm, right at the shaft. It will pop right off.

You'll need a lot of heat, a lot of lube, a heavy duty puller or two, a giant wrench or socket, a hammer, and time. I tried and failed. Heat the arm (not the shaft) thoroughly and apply constant pressure with the puller and it will come off so easy you'll wonder why you didn't try this first.
